Emmy- and Oscar-winning actor Robin Williams was found dead today at the age of 63 after possibly committing suicide.
The beloved actor, who had recently checked himself into rehab on July 1, was found inside of his home. A report from the Marin County coroner’s office has stated that the suspected cause of death is suicide via asphyxiation. However, “a comprehensive investigation,” including a toxicology report, “must be completed before a final determination is made.”
“Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss,” said a Williams family spokesperson. “The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”
“I am utterly heartbroken,” said Williams wife, Susan Schneider, in a statement to Variety. “On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”
Although he most recently appeared on CBS’s The Crazy Ones, Robin Williams’s television career began when he played the alien Mork throughout four seasons on Mork & Mindy. Williams received an Emmy nomination for his performance in 1979 and earned himself eight additional Emmy nods and two wins (once in 1987 and once in 1988 – both for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program) throughout the rest of his career.
Robin Williams was also well-known and loved for his performances in numerous films, including Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Aladdin, where he gave such life to the animated character of the Genie.
